Sheep life stages
How Long Do Sheep Live? Lifespan, Ageing and the Care of Older Sheep
Domestic sheep commonly live around 10–12 years, but breed, teeth, health and management shape every individual lifespan.

A domestic sheep often lives around 10–12 years, although every flock contains its own stories and surprises. Sheep do not count birthdays with candles, so teeth, records and a keeper's sharp eye help tell the tale.
The number on the birthday card
University animal-care guidance gives an average of 10–12 years, while NC State Extension lists 6–11. Breed, genetics, nutrition, disease exposure, environment and care all shape the real answer.
A lifespan range is useful context, not a countdown clock. Longevity and quality of life are different measures, and an individual sheep's comfort matters more than setting a record.
How can you tell a sheep’s age?
Teeth offer useful clues. Lambs begin with temporary incisors, then permanent front teeth emerge in stages. Later, wear, gaps and tooth loss become more informative than a neat birthday estimate. Ear tags and farm records provide better precision when available.
Dentition matters practically because sheep crop grass with lower incisors against a dental pad. Worn or missing teeth can make it harder to maintain condition, especially on short or coarse forage.
What changes in an older sheep?
Older sheep may need closer attention to teeth, body condition, feet, joints, parasite burden and shelter. A change in pace is not automatically illness, but weight loss, lameness, isolation, absence of cudding or abnormal posture needs investigation.
Good care adapts the environment rather than expecting an ageing animal to compete unchanged. Easier forage, accessible water and compatible companions can all matter, guided by a keeper and veterinary plan.
Growing older from a sheep's-eye view
Age becomes meaningful through tiny continuities: the route an ewe takes to shade, the companion she naps beside and the unhurried confidence of a sheep who knows exactly when the gate opens.
Members can see those routines in the bracelet-camera livestream and follow an individual over time in the private Sheep Room. Meet the current sheep and choose a character—not a statistic—to welcome into your day.
